A Journey of Resilience, Purpose, and Community: My Journey to Cybersecurity Advocacy
Challenges, personal development, and a dedication to making an impact have all contributed to my current position. It wasn't easy for a Nigerian immigrant student to make new friends, balance employment and school, and negotiate the strange landscape of a new educational system. However, these events have moulded my values and purpose in addition to my professional identity.
The Foundations of Resilience
As a member of the Yoruba ethnic group in Nigeria, I have a rich cultural background that emphasises wisdom, community, and tenacity. The sayings I was raised with, like "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step," have served as a source of guidance. I knew I was making a significant first step into a world I had long dreamed of when I started my master's program in cybersecurity, threat intelligence, and forensics at the University of Salford.
Leading the Way
At the University of Salford, one of my first responsibilities as a student web assistant was crucial. It was more than just a job; it was a platform that allowed me to directly impact my peers' digital experiences. I was heavily involved in updating and improving the university's website to make sure it was user-friendly, accessible, and suitable for the needs of thousands of students—including many today's grads.
My internship with Cyblack, where I obtained practical experience in threat detection, had an equally significant influence. Seeing the worldwide repercussions of cybersecurity breaches served as a reminder of the need for alertness and the significance of inclusivity in digital safety procedures. A passion for empowering under-represented communities in the cybersecurity industry was sparked by this experience.
Volunteering: Creating Connections
One of the main pillars of my path has been volunteering. Working as an Activator at men's football games taught me the importance of connections and teamwork. As an After School instructor with IntoUniversity, I was able to guide kids through their own struggles by telling them, "A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor."
Another highlight of my journey was serving as the Team Leader for Slum2School Africa's Innovation and Tech Team. In my role, I helped close the digital divide for young brains that may otherwise be left behind by giving underprivileged kids access to education and technology. These encounters strengthened my conviction that the best way to end cycles of disadvantage and bring about long-lasting change is by education and digital empowerment.
As a Cyber Helpline Helpline Responder, I provided emotional support and helpful guidance to those who were struggling with digital safety issues during times of vulnerability. Similar to this, I demonstrated the value of human connection in times of need by offering vital assistance to people on their recovery journeys as part of the Royal Voluntary Service's Community Wrap Around assistance initiative.
Establishing the Cyber Aware Group
The establishment of Cyber Aware Group, an institution dedicated to increasing cybersecurity awareness among vulnerable populations, was motivated by the convergence of all these events. Through engaging seminars, school visits, and collaborations with like-minded organisations, we give people the skills and information they need to securely traverse the digital world.
Our goal is to promote an inclusive culture in cybersecurity, which goes beyond education. This concept was greatly influenced by the University of Salford, which gave me the courage to take charge and be creative.
The Journey's Teachings
Creating and running Cyber Aware Group has taught me many valuable lessons.
Clarity of Purpose: Making an impression requires a mission statement.
Adaptability: It's critical to have the capacity to change tactics in response to evolving demands.
Cooperation: Alliances increase influence and promote mutual success.
Resilience: Sustainable growth is ensured by persevering despite difficulties.
Gazing Ahead
My dedication to closing the digital divide is unshakeable as I proceed on my quest. Offering specialised cybersecurity education to a range of communities, Cyber Aware Group is well-positioned to broaden its reach.
As you embark on the next stage of your journey, keep in mind that every obstacle presents a chance for development and that every little step leads to greatness.
As they say, "A candle loses nothing by lighting another candle," so let's keep lighting the way for one another.
